8.3/ 10

The short version

First swing with the Callaway Apex UW and it feels like a club I can swing at rather than one I have to steer. It replaced a long iron I had been lying to myself about for two seasons. The catch: flighting it down is a fight, it wants to go up.

How it played

I put it in play for 10 rounds and never babied it — wet mornings, baked-out afternoons, the lot. What I keep coming back to is that it feels like a club I can swing at rather than one I have to steer. Where it bit me: flighting it down is a fight, it wants to go up — worth knowing before you spend the money.

How it looks

Somewhere between an iron and a wood, and it hides its bulk well at address. I care less about that than how it feels, but it does not hurt.

What won me over

  • there is almost no turf resistance
  • it gets long approaches on the green instead of near it
  • the strike window feels twice the size of my 4-iron

Good to know before you buy

  • the sound is duller than the irons around it
  • it is hard to hit low into wind

My verdict

8.3/10 from me. If you need a bail-out club from 200 yards that still holds a green, the Callaway Apex UW earns its spot in the bag. If the sound is duller than the irons around it is a dealbreaker for you, keep looking.
