Callaway Opus Platinum Review

Wedge · 11 rounds in my bag

8.7/ 10

The short version

First swing with the Callaway Opus Platinum and the ball stays on the face a fraction longer, and I can feel exactly where it hit. Half wedges from 60 yards stopped rolling out on me, which is the whole point of buying one. The catch: the grooves lose bite once wet grass gets involved, same as everything else.

How it played

I put it in play for 11 rounds and never babied it — wet mornings, baked-out afternoons, the lot. What I keep coming back to is that the ball stays on the face a fraction longer, and I can feel exactly where it hit. Where it bit me: the grooves lose bite once wet grass gets involved, same as everything else — worth knowing before you spend the money.

How it looks

Simple grind, tidy grooves, and no shouting from the back. I care less about that than how it feels, but it does not hurt.

What won me over

  • feel on delicate chips is excellent
  • spin holds up on the second-bounce check
  • the leading edge sits low on tight lies

Good to know before you buy

  • it demands a clean strike from the rough
  • the grooves will wear if you practise a lot

My verdict

8.7/10 from me. If you have a scoring club you do not trust from 100 yards in, the Callaway Opus Platinum earns its spot in the bag. If it demands a clean strike from the rough is a dealbreaker for you, keep looking.
