9.2/ 10
The short version
A city muni that hosted the PGA Tour and still lets locals on for a resident rate. Memorial Park is the best 40-dollar-to-140-dollar round in the country and I will argue about it.
How it played
The width is a lie. Miss on the wrong side of a fairway and the green angle disappears. The run-offs mean every miss becomes a short-game decision instead of a hack out, which is the whole point.
How it looks
Wide Doak corridors, huge closely-mown run-offs and a bayou that makes the closing stretch tense.
What won me over
- Tour-quality greens at muni pricing
- short-game shots around the greens are endlessly interesting
- proof that public golf can be world class
Good to know before you buy
- tee times are brutally hard to get
- five-hour rounds on weekends
My verdict
9.2/10. My favourite round in Texas, full stop.
