The short version
Old Head is a spectacle first and a golf course second, and I'd still tell anyone to play it once. Nine holes run along 300-foot cliffs. That's the whole pitch and it works.
How it played
In wind it's borderline silly — I lost two balls over the cliffs and stopped caring. Greens were good and the routing is dramatic, but strategy takes a back seat to survival.
How it looks
A promontory jutting into the Atlantic with cliffs on three sides and no shelter anywhere.
What won me over
- the most dramatic setting in golf
- every hole photographs like an advert
- staff manage the fog and wind with humour
Good to know before you buy
- extremely expensive for what the golf itself asks
- fog can wipe out the views entirely
My verdict
8.3/10. Pay for the view, not the shot values.
