The short version
If I could only play one course in America again, it's Pacific Dunes. Short, wild, unbalanced on paper and perfect in practice.
How it played
The 4th along the cliff is the most photographed hole for a reason, and the 13th is the best short par 4 in the country. Doak's greens hold running shots and refuse airmailed ones.
How it looks
Gorse, sand blowouts and cliff-edge greens, with back-to-back par 3s that nobody complains about.
What won me over
- the routing is a masterpiece
- every hole is memorable a week later
- wind changes the round completely each day
Good to know before you buy
- it's a proper walk in the wind
- Bandon is a long way from any airport
My verdict
9.4/10. Best course in America that anyone can book.
