The short version
Those turtleback greens are exactly as advertised. I hit 14 greens in regulation-ish shots and made bogey on half of them, and left liking the course more than when I started.
How it played
The run-offs make you choose between putting, bumping and lobbing on nearly every hole. Driving is generous; the entire test is from 120 yards in. It's the best short-game examination in America.
How it looks
Sandy waste areas, wire grass and greens that shrug the ball off in four directions.
What won me over
- the most educational round you can play
- restoration made it look genuinely wild
- caddies are excellent
Good to know before you buy
- punishing if your wedge game is soft
- resort pricing is high in spring
My verdict
9.2/10. The American strategic classic.
