The short version
Hanse's No. 4 is louder and more dramatic than No. 2, and if you want fun rather than an exam, it's the better round.
How it played
More generous around the greens than No. 2, with bolder contours to use. I made more birdies and hit more interesting shots, even if the whole thing hangs together slightly less.
How it looks
Huge sandy scrapes, jagged edges and bigger elevation change than its famous neighbour.
What won me over
- more fun than No. 2 for a mid handicap
- dramatic sandy aesthetic
- great pairing round the day before No. 2
Good to know before you buy
- a couple of forced carries feel out of place
- not as strategically deep as its neighbour
My verdict
8.5/10. The best supporting act at Pinehurst.
