The short version
Doak on the Lubbock plains sounds like nothing, and then you stand on a green with four feet of internal movement in 30 mph of wind and understand what he did with a flat site.
How it played
Wind is the defence. I hit a punched 5-iron from 140 into the 7th and it still ran off the back. The ground game is required, and the recovery shots are the most creative I have played in Texas.
How it looks
Almost no trees, big sandy bunkering and greens with more contour than the land around them.
What won me over
- greens are the most interesting set of contours in the state
- genuine ground-game golf
- college-course pricing for a top-100 modern design
Good to know before you buy
- exposed to wind with zero shelter
- the flat site does not photograph well
My verdict
8.7/10. A hidden gem that will beat you up in the best way.
