The short version
Spyglass is the one that beats you. Five holes in the dunes, thirteen in the forest, and a scorecard that looks like a typing error by the turn.
How it played
It's long, the greens are small and the trees take away recovery options. I played it two shots better than Pebble and enjoyed it more, which surprised me.
How it looks
Opens with the most beautiful five holes on the Monterey Peninsula, then buries you in dark Del Monte forest.
What won me over
- the opening five holes are extraordinary
- a genuinely hard, honest test
- cheaper than Pebble with better golf holes
Good to know before you buy
- the forest stretch is relentless
- no ocean views after the 5th
My verdict
9.0/10. The best pure golf course on the peninsula.
