The short version
From the back tees the Oaks Course is a lot of golf, and I mean that as a compliment. Play it a set forward and it turns into one of the smartest Texas rounds you can book without a member.
How it played
Every par 4 seems to have a preferred side, and if you miss it the green shuts down. Greens were fast and firm in October, and the short game shots around them are the interesting part of the round.
How it looks
Live oaks, canyon edges and Dye-style bunker shaping that looks meaner than it plays.
What won me over
- real Tour test without a Tour-level tee sheet
- greens are pure and hold a check spin
- the par 3s all ask something different
Good to know before you buy
- 7,490 from the tips is punishing if you're honest about your handicap
- cart-path-only days slow it to a crawl
My verdict
8.8/10. Best public championship course in South Texas.
