8.4/ 10
The short version
Standing on the 16th with empty stands around you is odd and great. The rest of the course is a solid, fair desert test that is easier than television makes it look.
How it played
Wide fairways and receptive greens mean a decent player scores here. Wind is minimal, so it comes down to wedge distance control. The finishing three holes are genuinely good golf, not just theatre.
How it looks
Manicured desert framing, mounding built for crowds and the most famous grandstand in golf.
What won me over
- the 16th is a bucket-list moment
- conditioning is Tour-standard in winter
- fair for mid handicaps from the right tees
Good to know before you buy
- peak-season pricing is silly
- less desert character than Troon North
My verdict
8.4/10. Play it for the occasion, stay for a decent course.
