The short version
Waterville felt like the calmest big links I have played — huge fairways, a soft start and then a back nine in the dunes that gets serious fast.
How it played
The opening stretch is generous enough to build confidence, then 11 through 17 takes it away. Greens are big and rolled quick, so lag putting is a real skill here.
How it looks
Wide, green and framed by the Kerry hills, with the last seven holes hidden in the dunes.
What won me over
- the back nine is world class
- width makes it playable in wind
- the setting on the Ring of Kerry is unbeatable
Good to know before you buy
- the first six holes are forgettable
- remote enough that you'll build a day around it
My verdict
8.6/10. Worth the drive around the peninsula.
